A gntlman drssd as a civilian, who happnd to b walking by, stoppd and watchd, and thn askd th officr why h did not hlp.
“Do you know who I am, sir!”askd th officr, with indignation and astonishmnt⑤.“I am a corporal.”
“Oh!”said th othr. “I bg your pardon, I am sur.”
Thn th nwcomr thrw off his coat, and going to th littl group of mn, hlpd thm, so that th log was soon in position. Th corporal did not vn thank th gntlman for his hlp, but as th civilian put on his coat again, h said quitly:“Th nxt tim you hav a task of this kind in hand, sir, and hav not nough mn, just snd for m and I will com and hlp.”
“May I ask your nam?”askd th corporal.
“Ys, sir,”rplid th gntlman,“My nam is Gorg Washington and I am commandr-in-chif of th army. Goodby, sir.”
Th civilian walkd away, and th corporal stood still, unabl to say a word.
